How Do You Read A Transit Level?
A transit level is basically a telescope mounted horizontally on a tripod. Transits are used by surveyors, landscapers, architects and construction workers; a transit measures distance and angles of slope in a predefined area. Most transits require two people to get an accurate reading–one to operate the transit and the other to hold the rod, or measuring device, at the point in question. Set up the transit at a predetermined location that you wish to use as a starting base point. This is often an outside corner of an area prior to building or designing the space. Be sure that all leveling bubbles on the base and transit show true level to insure proper readings. Have an assistant stand at the opposite outside corner and hold the measuring rod straight and vertical. Look through the transit scope and write down the reading on the measuring rod where the crosshairs of the scope cross in the center. Have the assistant do the same at the remaining two corners, writing down the readings g
