How Do You Read A Knitting Pattern?
Once you’ve learned knitting lingo and the two basic stitches, the next step is learning how to read a knitting pattern. Knitting class instructors teach students how to read knitting patterns in local yarn shops, through community education programs and at chain craft stores such as Michaels. Choose a pattern that isn’t too complicated, such as a scarf. Read the pattern completely before starting your project. Sometimes patterns can be confusing, but the directions will become clearer once you start working. Purchase yarn specific to the pattern you’re using. Make sure you have the correct amount to complete your project. Choose the correct size needles according to the directions. Follow the pattern instructions order according to size. The smaller sizes are printed first and the larger sizes follow parenthetically. Mark off stitches on the pattern with a highlighter so you don’t knit the wrong size stitch by mistake. Follow the sequence of stitches in the pattern.
