Caulk is the rubbery line of sealant that you find along the seams where your shower floor meets the wall and generally in the vertical corners as well. Its purpose is to seal out moisture so it doesn’t get behind the tiles or other wall covering. Over time, caulk can become brittle and cracked or discolored and mildewed. Removing it and re-caulking is a fairly straightforward project. This is a good time to bleach the surface to prevent new mildew colonies from taking hold. Run your razor knife along the length of each existing caulk line, flat to the wall along one edge, then along the other edge. After the edges are cut in, scrape your putty knife forward through the middle of the caulk line, peeling out the caulk in one long strip. Wet your nylon scrub brush with a little dishwashing soap and thoroughly scrub the lines where the caulk was, getting up any residual caulk as well as any mildew or dirt. Rinse the area very well.
