You can communicate with teenagers! The language changes a bit, but with a little extra persistence you can keep the lines open with your teenagers. Okay, you had great comms with your boys as they were growing up. They’d come home from school or sports bursting with energy and words spilling out of their mouths. So what switch was turned off when they turned thirteen? You can turn it back on – remind them that you haven’t stopped loving them and you want to know what’s going on in their lives. First – be consistent. Maintain the traditional ‘talk-times’ when they were younger. You’d be surprised how much you can get a teenager to talk over their favorite dinner, Sunday breakfast, or in the car on the way to a sports game. Second – talk to them as well. If you’re having troubles, your children will pick up on it. If they see you hiding problems, then they’ll learn that from you.
