How Do You Raise A Pig For Food?
Not so terribly long ago, most people raised their own food. Whether they lived on the farm or in a city, most at least had a garden. If they had the space, often they would raise a pig for meat. This only required feeding the pig from late February until after the first freeze, usually in November. Check with your local agencies to confirm that you can have livestock in your location. Build a sturdy pen using hog wire or hog panels. Be sure to provide a covered shelter for your pig. Spread straw or hay in the shelter for bedding. Purchase a piglet from a livestock auction. Or, you can check the local papers for farmers who have weaner pigs to sell. Feed your piglet a store bought pig food purchased at your local feed store. You can supplement the feed with household scraps. Keep water available at all times. Start feeding corn shorts to you pig about one month before it is ready to be butchered.
