How Do You Qualify For A Humanitarian Service Medal?
The Humanitarian Service Medal was authorized by President Gerald Ford on Jan. 19, 1977, for United States military members who perform a designated humanitarian service. A few criteria are needed to qualify for the Humanitarian Service Medal. Serve as a member of any United States armed forces on active duty. This includes cadets at a United States Military Academy, the National Guard and the Reserve if their use has been authorized in the qualifying activity. Qualifying operations are listed in DOD manual 1348.33 (M). Perform in a specified humanitarian action or operation after April 1, 1975, in a distinguished and meritorious manner. Qualifying activities are designated by the Department of Defense and include evacuation of civilians from a combat area, humanitarian support to refugees and natural disaster relief.
