The Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal (GWOTEM) was authorized by President George W. Bush in March, 2003, and is awarded to United States service members who have fought terrorism overseas. Serve as a member in any of the United States armed forces. Deploy in a designated anti-terrorism operation for 30 consecutive days or 60 non-consecutive days after Sept. 11, 2001. There is no time requirement for participants who engage in combat or get killed or wounded. Receive the initial award of the GWOTEM by deploying to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. This includes the United States Central Command area (except for the Horn of Africa), Diego Garcia, eastern Turkey, the Middle East, the Philippines and all associated air spaces. Earn subsequent awards of the GWOTEM for approved operations in designated areas. The award of the GWOTEM in Afghanistan and Iraq was replaced in June 2005 with the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal, respectively. An
