At one time, anyone who had a driver’s license could legally drive a bus or tractor trailer, without any specialized training or skills testing. This changed once the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program was implemented throughout the U.S., making it necessary to obtain training. Take the Knowledge and Skills test, which consists of at least 30 questions. In order to pass the Knowledge portion, you must answer at least 80 percent of the questions correctly. The Skills test must be taken in a vehicle similar to the one you plan to operate with your CDL.
