You’ve decided to finally buy that car, but it’s located out of state. You are understandably concerned about protocol on how to obtain the title and get it registered in your home state. Fortunately, states have reciprocity rules that allow cars purchased out of state to be registered in your home state. Step 1 Arrange for transportation to pick up the vehicle. Step 2 Place a phone call to your insurance carrier to add the car to your policy. Step 3 Check the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the front left side of the windshield to ensure it matches the number on the title.
