How do you publish an html file from notepad to the web for public use?
That’s right. You can’t directly publish to the Internet from Notepad. You CAN use notepad to make your .HTML files [if that’s what you like using] but you will need another program to ‘upload’ the .HTML files to the Internet. Depending on WHERE you are going to have your website on the Internet the may or may not allow you to use a FTP program. If you can use FTP, then I suggest you use the FREEWARE program called ‘FileZilla FTP’ If your hosting server does NOT allow FTP access, then you will have to upload the .HTML files via their website… much like adding attachments. On a side note — if you don’t like using Notepad for your HTML design needs, you can alwasy use NVU — it’s free and it give you access to directly code your site or you can use it’s ‘wysiwyg’ feature.
First of all you have to have a space on the web where you can publish it (e.g. Geocities). Notepad, can’t publish anything to the web. It’s just a text editor. You need a FTP client to upload a file online. Well not necessarily, but it’s the most comfortable way of doing it. Mozilla Firefox web browser has an extension called fireftp which you can use (it’s free). Some hosts (especially free hosts) don’t allow FTP access. You need to log in to your account, and access the file manager. There they will ask you to select the file you want to upload, using a browse button after which you click on an upload button. This is especially annoying when you have multiple files to upload. You need to select each and every file on its own (you don’t have to hit upload every single time), plus they set a maximum number of files you can upload at a time. With FTP, you will need the address of the FTP server. If you have a payed web space, they will provide you with this name. A user name and a pass
