The Medallion Hybrid Tea is a shrub rose with an upright growing habit. An older hybrid rose, it was developed more than 45 years ago and remains popular for its uniquely large size, apricot shade and slightly licorice scent. Medallion is cold hardy compared to other roses, thriving in hardiness zones 4 through 9. In its natural state, it will grow up to 5-feet tall and 3 1/2-feet wide. Most commonly, it is planted and trimmed as a hedge, or as foundation plantings or borders. It can be aggressively pruned and trained to achieve an upright tree form. Pruning should take place in the spring as the buds come out of dormancy, begin to swell and after the last threat of frost has passed. Every cut you make should be on a diagonal and extend beyond an outside facing bud by 1/4 inch.
