How Do You Prune Hedges & Shrubs?
Pruning is a necessity to keep your yard looking nice as well as to keep shrubs and hedges healthy. Pruning encourages new growth and gets rid of areas that are dying. Some plants take well to being pruned into topiaries and others just need a trim here and there to keep them in good shape and off of the walkway. You should start pruning when you plant a hedge to train it, and keep it up all its life. Decide whether you want informal or formal style hedges and shrubs. Formal hedges have straight lines and definitive shapes, while informal hedges are allowed to grow in a more natural way. Cut back any areas infected with disease when you plant your hedge or shrub. You do not want the disease spreading to the rest of the plant. You should also cut away dead areas and any branches growing toward the middle of the plant, rather than pointing away. This allows sunlight into the middle of the plant and encourages better plant health, as well as directing the branches to grow differently. Rem
