How Do You Prune A Lilac Bush That Has Bees?

0

Lilac bushes are a beautiful addition to any yard, available in a variety of colors and easy to grow. The flowers are attractive to both butterflies and bees, which can make working in or around the bush difficult. Although they require little maintenance, an annual pruning is a suggested to help shape the plant and encourage prolific flower growth and health. If the plant is surrounded by hungry bees, that creates a problem. Bees are protected, and should not be killed. However, there are ways to discourage them away from the plant for a short while. Prune lilacs after they have stopped blooming, when bees are no longer interested in the bush. To prune, start with trimming larger stems from the bush’s center. This allows new shoots to develop on the outside of the plant, and creates better ventilation in the center of the plant. However, leave a rounded top on the plant. Get rid of any shoots at or near the ground, and cut off any unattractive or unhealthy branches from the main stalk
