One of the biggest complaints from rose growers is that their roses suffer winter die back in the stems. This of course affects the amount and quality of rose blooms the following year. By “healing” in the canes you can have your healthiest roses ever! Read how it’s done. When the plant is dormant in the fall slice down in the soil with a shovel on one side of the rose bush, being careful not to sever the roots. This will loosen up the root stock and prepare it to be bent over. Dig a four inch trench starting on the opposite side of the crown. Dig about 4 inches wide and as long as the rose stems are tall. Carefully bend the top portion of the plant over and lay it into the trench. Cover the stems with pine needles and leaves. Mound up the mulch over top of the surface above the trench. Let ‘er snow!
