Whether you use a cartridge filter or a diatomaceous earth filter, also known as a DE filter, the process for cleaning can be done on your own whenever it is necessary. A cartridge filter requires cleaning whenever it appears dirty and should be checked often. A DE filter can be cleaned when the seasons change. Follow these instructions to clean out the filter in your pool. Remove the cartridge filter and use a water hose, without the spray nozzle, to rinse the cartridge filter. Set the filter in a sunny area and allow it to air dry. Knock loose dirt and grime from the filter with a stiff bristled paintbrush. Mix six parts water and one part pool chlorine in a large bucket. Lower the filter into the bucket and replace the bucket’s lid. Let the filter soak for up to five days for maximum results. This kills mic
