How Do You Propagate Red Cedar Trees?
Cedar trees (Cupressaceae) live 800 to 1,000 years and grow up to 130 feet tall. Their trunks stretch 6 feet wide at the base. The versatile cedars are used as Christmas trees, landscaping, furniture and for medical proposes. Before planting a cedar tree make sure you have enough room to support it and plan on spreading as many seeds as possible. The cedars are propagated via two methods: through cutting and their seeds. The “from seed method” is used most often. Gather your cedar seeds from late October through November. Make sure they are collected before the tree’s scales bend back. Collect the seeds with a pruning pole. This makes it easier to remove the cones. Use the canvas tarp by placing it under the branches that have the cones you wish to take down.
