Lilacs are easy to propagate and thin out. The best time to transplant, is in the spring. Pick a cool evening or morning, and get ready to get your hands dirty. Lilacs even grow from a little piece of the root, as long as the lilac is placed in a nice sunny location and are cared for well, until the plant has gotten a good root hold. Locate the small offshoots at the bottom of the lilac plant. Small shoots will be easier to dig up, but if you have large ones, the same method can be applied, just get ready to use your muscles. Start by digging around a small shoot. Dig a hole around the plant, and try to pry up and locate the large root that is attaching it to the mother plant. Keep digging around the large root, following it as far as you can. The root can be pulled and lifted gently. You will need to cut the root off from the parent plant.
