From what I could make out from a French page on the website, he was born in Berne, Switzerland into an illustrious family and was some kind of a philosopher (or a patron of philosophers, my French isn’t that good). So he was technically Swiss, although in that region of Europe (the Alps), there are German speaking Swiss, French speaking Swiss, etc. so it’s hard to know for sure what his nationality was.
