If you have foul odors coming from your septic system, you may have a major problem in your septic system–or you may have a problem with your roof vents. First, you’ll need to determine whether the septic odors are due to an overly-full septic tank or a clogged drain field. If you’ve had your septic tank pumped and serviced recently, the problem is likely a ventilation issue. Homes with septic systems usually have vents installed in the roof that help to equalize the pressure in the plumbing and allow the wind to divert the sewage gasses away from the house. When these vents aren’t placed in optimal positions in the roof, the sewer gasses can flow into and around the house, causing septic tank smells.
