Many homes, particularly in the northern United States, use heating oil to provide central heat to families. This oil, which is stored in tanks inside or outside of the house, is usually the most effective means of warming the home. But because heating oil is a volatile, highly combustible substance, the holding tanks must be carefully maintained. If not, they can rust and leak, causing major damage. The last thing you want is an oil leak anywhere near your home. Take preventive steps to ward off rust and protect your family. Inspect your indoor tank thoroughly. Observe the connections of all pipes, valves, fittings and lines. Make sure that the opening cap is securely in place and in good condition. Make sure fuel lines attach to the top and not the bottom of the tank to prevent water being trapped in the lines. Place the heating oil tray under the tank.
