How Do You Prevent Root Rot Of Bedding Plants?
Root rot is a disease that affects a plant’s root system. There are many types of bacteria that cause root rot, making treatment with fungicide difficult. The best way to prevent root rot is to make your soil well-draining so water doesn’t remain near the plant’s roots and to ensure you’re not watering too frequently. Stick your finger into the soil before you water your plants. If the soil is wet 3 to 4 inches underground but dry on the top, do not water until the soil underground becomes drier. Dig a hole in the soil that is three times as wide the size of your plant’s root ball and at least a foot deeper. Prepare all holes you will need to plant in your garden bed. Fill the bottom four inches of the hole with medium-sized rocks, about the size of a cherry. If your plant’s root ball is 6 inches or less, you should add only 2 inches of rocks.
