How do you prevent perinatal infection?
Use of a barrier method of contraceptive (condom) can prevent transmission of some of the infections. Intravenous drug use and sexual intercourse with infected partners increases the risks of exposure to most of these infections. Pregnant women can be tested for many of the bacterial or viral infections described; however, effective treatment may not be available to protect the infant. New studies show that a woman’s nutritional status may contribute to her ability to fight off infections, particularly in cases of malnutrition. Proper prenatal care may improve outcomes and prevent some infections. Source: The Gale Group. Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, 3rd ed.
