Cedar is a beautiful building material used for decks, fences and siding. It is important to protect your cedar construction to keep it from weathering. Left unprotected, the cycle of exposure to moisture and drying plus the harmful ultra-violet (UV) rays from sunlight can cause damage and prematurely age your cedar wood. Use a wood-cleaning product to clean your cedar construction. Most wood cleaners are sold in concentrated form. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a maintenance-level cleaning solution. Wet down the wood, then use a brush or roller to apply the cleaner. Let the cleaner sit for 15 minutes, then scrub the wood down with a nylon bristle brush. Rinse the wood thoroughly. If the wood darkens as a result of the cleaning, use wood brightener to bring back the original luster. Cedar wood is known for having high levels of tannin.
