Here’s a tip on how to prevent that annoying, unsightly problem from happening ever again. Mark the contour of your garden bed using string. Place the flat-edged blade of the spade on the inside edge of the string (the side facing the bed), keeping the shovel blade perfectly perpendicular to the ground. Step down firmly onto the spade pushing the blade about 8 inches deep into the ground. Do not twist the shovel. Next, without moving the tip of the shovel blade, push the top of the shovel handle away from you towards the bed thus creating a 45 degree angled V-shaped trough in the dirt.
