How Do You Preserve & Display Vintage Linens?
Vintage linens can add a touch of sentimental beauty to your home. Picture a floral tablecloth gracing a side table in your living room or a cheerful, printed apron artfully displayed in your kitchen. Well-worn and delicate fabrics need special attention to remain attractive for years to come. With a little effort and bit of creativity, you can preserve and display grandma’s special doilies, your mother’s holiday table runners and other treasures from the past. Roll, rather than fold, items to be stored. Rolling prevents creases. Wrap linens in buffered, acid-free tissue or Tyvec. According to Martha Stewart, anything made of wood, such as tissue paper, newsprint or cardboard will react with the linen and cause it to become yellow and brittle. Place linens in an acid-free box or tube or in a cardboard box lined with muslin. Note that if you use muslin, you will need to wash it every couple of years.
