With proper care and cleaning a quilt can last as long as the fibers hold together, perhaps even longer. Adhering to a simple regiment of care can make all the difference with regards to preserving your handmade quilt. Spread out the quilt and check for any tears, damage, or dirt. Stitch any tears with thread that matches the thread used to make the quilt. Dirt or smudges should be wiped clean with a damp rag. Avoid using any soap or cleaners as they can damage the color and fabric of the quilt. Air dry the quilt. Never subject a quilt to a dryer. The heat can damage the fabric. Wrap a cardboard tube (as you would find with a roll of wrapping paper or at a fabric store) with aluminum foil. Roll the quilt around the foil-wrapped tube.
