Holding your own in conversations and debates can somewhat sway the opinions of others, but they do not have the impact of a speech. With a speech, it’s only you talking and you have to take advantage of that opportunity. Know your audience. If you know the beliefs, morals, and values of your audience, you will see what kind of angle you can take to persuade them. Write and memorize your speech. Keep your written speech with you, however, because you may forget what you were going to say Grab your audience’s attention with a strong introduction. Good hooks include: challenging your audience with a difficult question, a quote from a credible person, and an engaging story that addresses your topic. Follow up with background information and a clear thesis statement. Enhance the message with proper posture, gesturing, and movement. Do not stand like a statue yet do not do the jitterbug. Firm eye contact with your audience, good posture, and fluid hand movements work well. Do not look defen
