What can strike fear into the heart of even the most competent classroom teachers who have children with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome in their inclusion classroom? The unexpected fire and tornado drill! Here’s a simple way to “prepare” your students for either, even when you aren’t expecting the drill! We’ll create a “drill” card for you to give your student during a drill. Using cardboard, poster board or some other heavy duty paper, cut a rectangle approximately 4″ x 9″ (any rectangle is fine, as long as it’s large enough to contain the instructions but small enough to be easily carried by the student). Type the instructions on a word processing program, making sure the margins fit within the dimensions of the cardboard. Search the internet for clip art, or draw your own picture for the drill card (if age appropriate). Does your student like a special character?
