How Do You Prepare Wood Surfaces For Refinishing By Stripping?
Stripping work is slow but necessary work if your refinishing is to be a success. Sanding and scraping are most likely going to be necessary even if you use heat or chemicals. Both sanding and scraping are best done on flat surfaces. To do any sanding you will need a dust mask and goggles and protective clothing to keep the fine particles off your skin. The dust from the material you are removing can be toxic. A sanding disk or belt are best used with a medium or find grit. Your disk or belt will soon clog if you use a coarse grit, especially if you are removing a thick layer of finish. A medium grit gives you better control of how much you remove and avoids the deep scratches in the wood itself that coarse grits may make. There are many tools for scraping. This is however a hard job and great care must be taken not to gouge the wood Both sanding and scraping are often the final phase of stripping, taking off what remains after heat or chemicals have done their job.
