How Do You Prepare Spring Raised Garden Beds?
Raised garden beds make gardening possible in areas where the soil is not suitable for growing and can be built to any height to accommodate the needs of the gardener. They provide the added benefit of well-drained soil and more room for roots to grow. Because the bed is generally no wider than a person can reach comfortably to the center, weeding and routine care is manageable with little time investment. Preparing the soil in spring is relatively easy. Remove any garden debris that remains from the previous year. Discard roots or plant parts and destroy any weeds that may have grown in the bed. Check the soil level to determine if more soil needs to be added. Organic matter shrinks as it decomposes, some soil is removed during harvest and a small amount may wash away with heavy rains. Adding fresh soil in the spring to maintain the desired level is often necessary, particularly in the first few years of use. Add organic matter in the form of peat moss, compost, leaves or well-rotted
