How Do You Prepare For A Social Security Disability Hearing?
A Social Security Disability Hearing before an Administrative Law Judge can sound very intimidating, but if you know what to expect and how to prepare, it will go smoothly. This is your chance to actually voice your medical problems and limitations to the judge. While I recommend to my clients to not exaggerate their symptoms, I also tell them to not hold back on explaining how their complications affect their every day life and their inability to hold a full time job or SGA (Substantial Gainful Activity). The ALJ Hearing is not very formal. I’ve attended some held at Federal building courtrooms, Hotel Conference rooms, as well as hotel rooms! However, it is still a Hearing and is conducted professionally. I have had many people say that they were told to dress shabby, not comb their hair, not to sleep the night before and to simply look their worst. Wrong!!
