How Do You Prepare A Basement Floor For New Flooring Installation?
Installing a new floor in your basement can make it more livable and more saleable. Now is not the time to scrimp on preparation. How the new floor will look, and how long it will last, depends just as much how you prep the base as what kind of floor you install. Whether you install hardwoods or laminate, carpet or vinyl, take the time to prep it right. Step 1 Remove any hard debris, paint and rough spots with a scraper. Step 2 Fill cracks or holes in a cement floor. Wait for the filling to dry and sand flat. Nail laminate with finishing nails if you are laying a new floor over an existing material. The sub floor must be flat and even. Step 3 Remove old linoleum. Vinyl tends to crack and lift off of its glued surface with time. Even if the floor covering looks flat now, it will eventually separate. Take it up. Step 4 Clean continuously.
