Sanding a wood floor is a major project that is a little less difficult if you prepare properly. Removing the floor trim and putting it back on later may sound like a lot of work, but it’s easier than trying to get a big, bulky drum sander to make a perfect line alongside the wall. Even the roughest sandpaper quickly becomes shredded if you hit a raised nail head. Dust will get everywhere. So take the time to remove what you can from the room, cover what can’t be taken out and seal off the area properly. Remove all furniture from the room. Use a pry bar and hammer to remove all base shoe in the room. (The base shoe is the small piece of trim that sits directly on the floor and generally has a baseboard behind it.) Remove it carefully so you can re-use it after sanding. To avoid damaging the baseboard, set a putty knife against it, between the pry bar and the baseboard, as you pry out the base shoe.
