For those willing to invest a little time and effort, though, aluminum water pumps can be polished to a brilliant shine that will transform even the dullest engine bay. Polished aluminum components are popular on hot rods and custom cars, and this upgrade can be accomplished with the right tools and supplies. Remove the water pump from the vehicle if it is not already off the engine. Consult your manual for instructions on removal if unclear on the procedure. The water pump is installed with several deep bolts around its perimeter that fasten it to the motor. Removing it will also require draining the coolant. Secure the water pump in a bench vise or clamp it down. Begin polishing the pump with 40-grit sandpaper mounted to a power drill. Remove the rough casting marks and ridges.
