How Do You Play Grindcore Guitar?
Grindcore has been around for the last 25 years and hasn’t declined in popularity. On the contrary, many musicians look to the classic sounds of Napalm Death, Sore Throat, and Fear of God for inspiration. Younger musicians just picking up a guitar for the first time often have trouble learning how to play guitar like their favorite grindcore guitarists. However, the face-melting riffs of grindcore are nothing to be intimidated by–at least not for the aspiring musician. Tune low–way low. You’ll never get the distinct sound of grindcore without tuning down. Tune your guitar to D at least. Some bands tune as low as B. Play around with your guitar. See what sounds best to you. Get an amp between 60 and 100 watts. Part of the grindcore sound comes from working your amp hard. Until you start playing large gigs, anything above 100 watts is overkill.
