How Do You Plant Carrots Under Plastic Mulch?
Growing carrots at home is a fairly easy process, even for a novice gardener. However, many gardeners are unsure how to help these root plants survive the winter. When planting carrots for winter storage, keeping the soil warm and free from water becomes extremely important. The best way to keep the soil conditions ideal is to cover carrot beds with a combination of leaf mulch and plastic sheeting. The leaves provide organic mulch while the plastic sheets keep out moisture and prevent the ground from freezing. Begin by planting carrots in a bed of light or sandy loam about 4 to 5 inches apart. Pack the carrots tightly in the bed, spacing them about 4 inches apart in all directions. When nightly temperatures drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, gather enough leaves to cover the carrot bed. Cover the bed with leaves and extend the leaf cover about 6 inches from the edges of the bed on all sides. Once the bed is covered in leaves, place the large plastic sheet over the top of the carrot bed
