If you are an onion fan, you can grow your own onions in your garden. The earlier in the spring they are planted, the bigger they will become. They are very easy to plant and to care for. Keep the onion rows well maintained, removing weeds and loosening the soil around them as they grow. Do not over water them. Fertilize the onions regularly so they will grow well. When they are ready to harvest, pull them out of the ground and leave them on the surface of the ground for a few days to dry out. Step 1 Mix two pounds of 16-16-16 all-purpose fertilizer into 100 square feet of soil before planting the onions in early spring.
