After you finish enjoying the avocado, you can grow your own avocado tree by planting the seed in water. This is a fun project that you can do by yourself or with your children, and it makes for a nice windowsill decoration. Follow these simple steps to get your avocado plant started. Take the seed from a recently opened avocado. Rinse the seed off in cold water. Use your hands to get any excess avocado off of the seed. Pat the seed dry with a towel. Push three toothpicks into the fattest part of the avocado so that they are about one-half inch into the seed. Space the toothpicks out evenly around the seed. The toothpicks will be used as an anchor to hold the seed up above the water. Fill a drinking glass or vase with water.
