How Do You Plant Asparagus Near Shrubs?
Growing asparagus is a rewarding task. Asparagus is one of the earliest harvested vegetables and established plants can perennially yield delicious crops for 15 years or more. Start by purchasing healthy asparagus crowns (the root system of an asparagus plant). With planning, proper planting and good care, by the third year after planting, you will be able to harvest about a half-pound of asparagus spears from each crown you have planted. Give your plants space! Planting asparagus near shrubs necessitates careful spacing. Allow approximately 5 feet of space between your asparagus bed and neighboring shrubs. Also allow 18 inches between crowns (if planting multiple crowns) and 5 feet of space in between rows (if planting multiple rows). Consider the conditions. Your asparagus should be placed in an area that will not be in your way and that receives a minimum of seven hours of sun each day. Make sure the nearby shrubs will not cast shadows on your asparagus for long portions of the day.
