Plant English walnut trees in the early spring, as soon as the ground can be worked and temperatures no longer dip below freezing. Purchase a healthy tree from a nursery or garden center in your region to assure the plant is acclimatized to local conditions. Keep the pot or root ball moist from purchase until you get it in the ground. An English walnut should be planted in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Plant the tree away from buildings and parking spaces to ensure falling leaves and walnuts from the mature tree will not cause damage. Dig a hole two and a half-feet deep and three-feet wide.
