A Rose of Sharon bush is not really a rose at all. This flowering bush comes from the hibiscus family. The Rose of Sharon is also known as a Chinese hibiscus and Althea shrub. It will produce flowers late in the summer through early fall. A starter bush is one that has been formed by clipping budding branches, then potting them until they form roots. Starter bushes also can be found growing underneath the main bush. Planting a starter bush will depend on its root system. If there are plenty of roots, it can be planted. If the roots are barely formed, it is best to wait before planting it outdoors. Plant the Rose of Sharon starter bush where it will get plenty of sunlight and minimal shade. Keep the soil moist and capable of good drainage. Dig a hole the same depth as the Rose of Sharon’s root system and at least two times wider to allow the roots to spread. Mix a compost or conditioner into the dirt that was removed from the planting hole. Mix compost and soil at a 50-50 ratio. Set the
