Dog doors come in many models suitable for installation for in-wall, door, sliding glass, metal or aluminum panels. However, choose a door that is too small and it will be extremely frustrating for both you and your dog, probably resulting in another trip to the store, not to mention the extra time of a second installation. A little preparation and it won’t be long before you can sit back, put your feet up and let the dog let himself out. Stand face to face with your dog. Measure at her widest point from left to right and add an inch. Her widest part will be at the shoulders or hips, depending on the dog breed. Measure from the top of your dog’s shoulder to the underside of her chest just behind the front legs, and add an inch. Use these two measurements to draw and cut out a rectangle on a piece of cardboard. Test the template. Your dog should be able to easily walk through the cut-out in the cardboard template.
