How Do You Pick A Freestanding Birth Center?
If the idea of having your baby in a relaxed atmosphere with family members present appeals to you, a freestanding birth center is worth considering. Usually reserved for women who have already given birth naturally, these centers admit low-risk mothers who choose a drug-free birth. There are some guidelines when picking one. Contact the NACC (National Association of Childbearing Centers) to make sure the center is accredited. Unfortunately, many states have no certified centers. (See Resources below.) Walk through the facilities to determine if giving birth there is right for you. Rooms are generally equipped with kitchens where the mother and family eat during and after labor, whirlpool baths and comfortable furniture for the family to relax. Visit a doctor during your pregnancy to determine if your birth will be low risk. A midwife attends women who choose freestanding birth centers and no medical intervention takes place. If you have given birth before and your doctor sees no probl
