How Do You Perform The Vamp When Hula Dancing?
Most hula dances begin with a vamp to establish the tempo and tone of the dance to follow. The vamp uses the basic walking step, or kaholo, which generally first moves to the right for 2 steps and then to the left for 2 steps. The choreography is easy so you can work on your hip and arm movements. Bend your knees straight ahead so they’re over your feet. Keep your torso straight and your hips relaxed. Allow your hips to tip slightly back rather than trying to tuck your pelvis in as you’re dancing. Raise your right hand straight out to your right side with your fingers together, but not rigid.
