How Do You Perform Rescue Breathing For An Adult?
Sometimes, it is necessary to give rescue breathing to an adult. Here’s what to do when there is a pulse, but a victim is not breathing on his own. Check the scene for safety, then check the victim for consciousness by tapping and shouting on her shoulder. Call 911 or the local emergency number. Open the victim’s airway by placing one hand on the forehead and two fingers under the chin, gently tilting the head back enough so the mouth opens naturally. Look, listen and feel for breathing by placing your ear near the victim’s mouth and watching his chest for any signs of movement. Give two initial rescue breaths to determine if the victim is choking by plugging the nose and covering her mouth with yours. Only breathe hard enough until you see their chest gently rise. Feel for a pulse on the carotid artery on the side of the neck using your index and middle finger. Give the victim one breath every five seconds. Continue this until EMS or further help arrives.
