How Do You Perform Postural Drainage Of The Lungs?
Postural drainage and percussion (PD&P) is a widely accepted, simple technique for clearing mucus from the lungs. The therapeutic practice is vital to mobilizing bronchial secretions for better breathing in individuals who cannot remove these secretions on their own. PD&P sessions involve chest percussion and positioning that loosen mucous and allow gravity to carry the drainage out of the five lobes of the lungs and into the central airways, where it can be coughed out or suctioned. Arrange pillows on a floor or table as needed and use the following postural drainage positions for therapy. Sessions generally take 20 to 40 minutes. Seat the individual on the table or board, leaning against a back rest at a 30 degree angle. Clap, or percuss, the tops of the shoulders with cupped hands for 2 to 4 minutes. Percussions should be vigorous but not painful. If a palm percussor is available, clapping is not necessary. Encourage her to cough or huff vigorously to remove fluid (do this after eac
