How Do You Perform A Skin Self-Examination?
The purpose of a regular skin self-exam is to become familiar with markings on your body. This can help you be alert to changes that might indicate the form of skin cancer known as melanoma. These guidelines follow the recommendations of the American Cancer Society. Examine your body with an eye to changes in the size, shape and color of moles, blemishes and birthmarks. Start by examining yourself in front of a full-length mirror. Check your body front and back, then raise your arms and check your right and left sides. Check the back of your neck and your scalp. To do this, stand with your back to a full-length mirror, part your hair and lift it, and hold a hand mirror up to your head. Study your arms and hands. Bend your elbows and check your forearms, upper arms, underarms and palms. Examine your legs and feet. Sit down to check the backs of your legs and the soles of your feet, as well as the spaces between your toes.
