How Do You Perform A Cable Oblique Twist?

A cable oblique twist works your waist muscles. These muscles, your obliques, are important for spinal flexion, trunk rotation and breathing. You can perform this exercise on two legs or on one leg for some balance training as well. Wrap a cable around a pole or ask a friend to hold it at sternum height. Face the pole or friend. Grab both handles with both hands, interlacing your fingers. Straighten your arms. Stand with feet hip-width apart or on your right leg. The knees should be slightly bent and the abs should be engaged. Rotate to the right as far as you can without rotating your hips. The idea is to isolate and rotate your waist and upper body without involving your lower body. Hold the rotated position with your arms out parallel to the floor for 2 seconds. Do 12 twists to the right, returning to the center starting position each time. Rotate to the left 12 times. Switch legs if you are doing the single-leg variation.
