If you routinely store sensitive information on a removable thumb drive, you might be worried about using it on public computers. However, a good way to ensure that your data is safe is to password protect the contents of the drive. By using some free software, you can keep the contents of your drive secret and use your thumb drive when and where you want to. Download and install free USB encryption software. See the Resources section for some suggestions. Connect your USB drive to your computer. Then launch the encryption software. Identify your USB drive as a file or “volume” to be encrypted. The process for this will vary by software. Make sure there is some free space on your USB drive so that the decryption software can be downloaded to the drive. Set a password. Once the decryption software has been downloaded and the data on the drive has been encrypted, all you will need to do to finish the process is to set a password. Make sure it is something you will remember.
