In fifth grade math, students are learning measurements, graphs, how to borrow in subtraction and a little bit about fractions, light geometry, probability, ratios, easy statistic terms and percentages. Elementary math builds on itself. If the student and parent make sure that the student does well each year, it will be a natural progression to the next year for the student, because it is the same material just a bit more difficult. Pull out the students math textbook. This is always a good place to start, because these are the general themes and requirements for fifth grade math. Talk to the child’s math teacher and try to find out how the student is doing compared to other students or the grade-level she’s in. See if the teacher has any diagnostic tests he can provide for the student, to check the students math aptitude.
